About · Our story

We built this for a family like yours.

Legatus Vault is a family-run company. It started with a loss, and with a question no family should have to ask in the middle of grief: where did they put it?

The moment that started it

Someone in our family passed away. He had done the responsible thing. He had a trust, a will, and the paperwork that was supposed to take care of the people he loved. But when he was gone, his wife and his children could not find any of it. They knew it existed somewhere. They just had no idea where.

So instead of grieving, they searched. They went through closets and filing cabinets. They called the bank. They tried to remember the name of the attorney who drew up the documents years before. The weeks that should have belonged to the family belonged to the paperwork, and the paperwork was nowhere to be found.

It was not that he had been careless. It was that there was no good place to put these things — no single, trusted place that stays safe while you are alive and becomes reachable, by the right people, once you are gone. We thought there should be. So we set out to build it.

Who is behind it

We are a small, family-run, US-based company — real people who lived this problem, not a faceless platform. That matters to us, and we think it will matter to you. When you write to us, a person answers. When you trust us with the documents that hold your family together, you are trusting people who understand exactly why they matter.

Our mission is narrow on purpose: make sure no family has to spend the hardest weeks of their lives searching for what a loved one already prepared. Everything we build is measured against that one promise.

What Legatus does

Legatus Vault is a secure place to keep your trust, your will, and the documents your family will need. You upload them while you are here. You decide who should receive them. And when the time comes, after the people you trust have confirmed it, your family can find everything in one place and download their copies. No locked drawers. No guessing. No searching during the hardest weeks of their lives.

That is the whole idea, and we have tried to do it with real care. Your documents are encrypted. Nothing is released until your chosen verifiers confirm, together, that the time has come — and even then only after a waiting period during which a mistake can be undone. Every action on your account is recorded in a history that even we cannot rewrite. You can read exactly how all of that works on our security page.

Cheaper on purpose

The big companies in this space charge somewhere between a hundred and fifty and nearly five hundred dollars a year. We made ours forty-nine dollars a year — and we did it on purpose. Protecting your family should not be a luxury reserved for people who can afford a SaaS subscription, and the families most likely to be caught without a plan are rarely the ones being sold to.

We keep the price low by doing one thing well instead of many things loudly. We are not trying to be your filing cabinet, your password manager, and your photo album. We are the safe home for the documents that matter most, and the careful hand-off when the time comes. You can see the plans on our pricing page.

We are not a law firm

We want to be honest about what we are. Legatus Vault is a vault and a careful way of handing things on. We are not a law firm, and we do not give legal advice. We hold the documents you have already made, and we make sure they reach the right hands. For the documents themselves — for drafting a will or a trust, or for any question about your particular situation — a licensed estate attorney is still your best friend, and we will always say so. We work alongside the professional you choose; we never replace them.

What we stand behind

Promises we make to every family

  • Bank-level encryption

Every document is locked with the same standard banks and governments use — readable only by you and the people you choose. We never keep your keys next to your files.

    How we protect your documents
  • A verified hand-off, not a guess

Nothing is released on a timer or an unanswered email. The people you trust confirm together that the time has come, a waiting period passes during which a mistake can be undone, and only then do your documents reach the family you named.

  • A record even we cannot rewrite

Every meaningful action on your account — uploads, designations, releases — is written to a permanent, append-only history. Your family can see exactly what happened, and when.

    See what we record
  • Your documents are never ours to sell

We do not sell your information. We do not share it. We do not train artificial intelligence on it. You can export your complete archive at any time.

  • We will tell you before any shutdown

If we ever wind the service down, we will give you clear notice and time to take everything with you. Your archive is yours to keep — that promise is not buried in the fine print.

  • Not a law firm — and we say so

We safeguard the documents you have already made and deliver them to the right hands. We do not give legal advice. For the documents themselves, a licensed estate attorney is still your best friend, and we will always say so.

What we believe

We believe that planning for the day you will not be here is not morbid. It is one of the most loving things a person can do for a family. The most generous gift you can leave is not only what you provide, but a clear and simple path to it.

Most of the people we serve set their vault up once and rarely think about it again. That is the point. It is quietly there when it matters, the way a good insurance policy is — not another app demanding your attention.

Where we are going

Today, Legatus does one thing and tries to do it gracefully: it keeps your estate documents safe and releases them to the people you choose when the time comes. We have left out everything that would get in the way of doing that well.

Over time, we want to make the hard parts easier. We are exploring ways to help families prepare these documents in the first place, with guidance suited to the state they live in, so that fewer people are ever caught without a plan. We will add what genuinely helps the families who trust us, and we will leave out the rest. If we ever lose the seriousness that started this, we will have failed the family whose search set us on our way.
